About this book

Until recently little attention has been paid to the design and operation of small wastewater treatment plants, despite the vast number of such plants all over the world. Small rural communities (with populations in the 100-2000 range), tourist and educational establishments and campsites provide typical applications. The 46 papers presented in this volume cover design, operation and management of small wastewater treatment plants over a broad range of technologies. Both natural - such as reed beds, ponds, infiltration and evapotranspiration - and technically advanced chemical and biological methods are discussed. The Proceedings demonstrate the importance of considering local circumstances in the design of plants, but also that problems of operation and management are quite similar in most countries. The book also shows a trend towards the use of biofilm reactors and away from activated sludge systems.
