About this book

Nation states support scientific research as a contribution to culture and in the expectation of achieving economic benefit. European collaboration is essential for the largest of the "big science" projects and, as demonstrated for example by particle physics, can be highly successful. There is, however, a growing tendency towards the funding of a wider range of science at the European Union level rather than the Nation State level. This work examines developments in science funding in the European Union, looks at the problems which arise, and the benefits which are sought and achieved by countries within Europe.

Contents

The European dimension, William Waldegrave; the funding for small and large biological science in Europe, Tom Blundell; European needs in the coming century of biology, Fotic Kafatos; the meaning of subsidiarity in European research - the experience of the Federal Republic of Germany, Hubert Markl; incentives for collaboration - rewards for the funder and the funded, Sir Graeme Davies; if it is permitted, must it be compulsory?, Howard Newby; the European dimension of the UK science base - patterns and policies, Sir Robert May; European Union research programmes, Jorma Routii and William Cannell; 2017 - a science funding model in Europe, Tony Mayer; summary of discussions, Nina Hall.
