About this book

Language: German

Eight species of large bears are currently living on our planet. They include both the largest and heaviest land predators, as well as the small sunbears, which is just the size of a big shepherd dog. Tropical termite and ant-eaters, specialized "bamboo bears", seal hunters and berry pickers – the dietary variety is as great as the differences in climate and terrain type between eternal ice, high mountain pastures and rainforest. In almost every culture, where bears occur or occurred in the area, they play a "leading role" in legends and fairy tales.

In introductory chapters systematics, phylogeny and lifestyle of the large bears are discussed. The subsequent chapters are devoted to each species, and sometimes even subspecies.
