About this book

The statigraphic record represents the history of processes and events that occurred at the surface of the earth. Presently, there are no textbooks on the market that integrate physical, chemical, and biological processes to predict stratigraphic patterns. Visher's authoritative "Stratigraphic Systems" fills this niche. It outlines the principle stratigraphic concepts for exploration of hydrocarbon accumulations, with more than 700 illustrations. Can be used as a primary textbook for an undergraduate course in stratigraphy and sedimentation. The CD-ROM features expert systems software for identifying or verifying stratigraphic intervals. It provides historical and paleogeographic context for observations and conveniently organizes stratigraphic systems into basinal frameworks. It incorporates statistical probability analysis, yet is not mathematically demanding. It stresses an analytical, rather than a descriptive, approach to predicting temporal and areal stratigraphic patterns.

Biography

Dr. Glenn Visher has enjoyed many parrallel careers. After receiving his Ph.D. degree from Northwestern University, he joined Shell Oil Company as an Exploration Geologist. He continued his career as a Research Scientist at Sinclair Research, Inc. For 15 years he was first an Associate Professor and then a Professor at the University of Tulsa. He has taught seminars around the world for thousands of participants, commencing in 1968, and still continuing. In 1979, he formed a petroleum exploration company and has been operator and producer of petroleum until the present. He has been honored as the organizer of professional symposia at national and international meetings, and is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Geological Society of America. He has published many papers, some with more than 500 citations. In 1984, PennWell published his book, Exploration Stratigraphy, and a Second Edition was published in 1990. Collectively these books have sold more than 4500 copies.Presently, he is writing books about his inter-cultural experiences around the world. He recently published Human Values: From the Greeks to Modern Times and is preparing another book, The Origin of Human Values: A Scientific Analysis.

Media reviews
...I recommend this book for graduate studies in that the author has summarized a very large amount of existing literature on stratigraphic systems literature and will serve as an excellent guide for teaching sedimentology and stratigraphy. In addition, researchers will find this book useful in that it is a good summary of ancient sedimentary facies literature and the references are quite complete and up-to-date. --James M. Coleman, AAPG BULLETIN, March 2001 "This important book by Visher is a comprehensive and up-to-date treatment of stratigraphy and sequence stratigraphy. It is well-written and well-illustrated. A comprehensive index is included. I enjoyed reviewing it and will request my students to become familiar with it." --Gerald M. Friedman, JOURNAL OF SEDIMENTARY RESEARCH "This impressive book is by an author who understands the needs of an exploration geologist; he covers all of them. The book and accompanying CD provide the basis for a multivarient analysis of different depositional systems. The CD is loaded with illustrations and knowledge, with expert systems search engines provided. The book has six parts, 25 chapters, and an introduction that gives a good summary of reconstructing depositional history and then developing and using the information system along with the stratigraphic system." --Fouad Michael, THE LEADING EDGE, May 2001 "...a valuable summary and organization of ancient and Holocene examples into depositional systems and settings. Tectonic controls and basin settings of stratigraphic sequences are discussed. Depositional systems are then organized into fifteen siliciclastic and six bioclastic and evaporitic systems, ranging through nonmarine, fluvial, deltaic, coastal, shelf, and deepwater systems. Each of these systems is thoroughly discussed and many examples are summarized, with lists of attributes for each depositional system to help with comparisons. It is very valuable as a reference and historic resume for a wide variety of tectonic and basinal settings, depositional systems, and stratigraphic examples. Abundant illustrations are mostly taken directly from references, with very succinct summary discussions in the text. This book gives a new dimension to the science of stratigraphic analysis. I hope the system it advocates can be used to spark new enthusiasm where it is much needed." --Robert M. Mitchum, GEOTIMES, October 2001
