About this book

During the early 1980s interest in the conservation of old trees and pollards in Britain gathered momentum in an effort to conserve these veteran trees and pollards before they eventually collapsed under the weight of their top heavy limbs. Experiments in repollarding, which was really the conservation of lapsed pollards, were started at Hatfield Forest by the National Trust, Burnham Beeches by the Corporation of London and at Hainault Forest by the London Borough of Redbridge. At that time there was a dearth of information about methods of pollarding and most earlier attempts at conservation were carried out in isolation, unaware of other trials being attempted across the country.

The Conservation of Veteran Trees seminars at Burnham Beeches and Epping Forest and the establishment of the Ancient Tree Forum demonstrates the considerable interest which has been generated in the management of old trees. These initiatives have led to a significant increase in exchange of information and experience about the origins and practice of pollarding. They have also emphasised the need for clarity in the terms used to describe old trees, pollards and their traditional management practices. It is important to be clear in the difference between the conservation of lapsed pollards, pollarding and repollarding to ensure that everyone understands the management appropriate to each state.

Pollard and Veteran Tree Management II incorporates the proceedings of the meeting hosted by the Corporation of London at Epping Forest in 1993.
