July. After a long journey of almost six thousand kilometers, the humpback whales arrive in Polynesia, escaping the rigors of the southern winter now keeping an icy grip on their Antarctic pastures. Some of them will stop at the Australe Islands, while others will push further north and scatter in all the archipelagos of the country. For four to five months, the waters around the islands resound with the song of these behemoths. Fights, romances, births; the waters of this tropical resort become the scene of spectacular lovemaking, and captivating melodies sung by the big males.

Passion, perseverance and audacity have allowed the authors of this book, all established naturalists, to capture the splendor of this underwater saga. They offer us here a supreme photographic ode to the South Pacific humpback whales.
