For many Third World countries tourism is the mainstay of the economy, but the flow of visitors can quickly dry up in the wake of political instability or environmental disasters. With the use of case-studies, the author illustrates the great diversity of problems facing host countries, and how all too often the industry slips into foreign control. He concludes by exploring ways of managing tourism as a resource, and evaluating its contribution towards national development.
