About this book

Papers from a symposium sponsored by the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography examine the scientific, economic and political factors which affect pollution of the Lakes. Three questions are addressed: What changes have occurred in the Great Lakes community? What role have toxic substances had in effecting such changes? How can researchers better investigate these effects?

Effects of Toxicants on Phytoplankton with Special Reference to the Laurentian Great Lakes; The Effects of Toxic Substances on the Structural and Functional Characteristics of Zooplankton Populations: Great Lakes Perspective; Chemical Contaminants in the Great Lakes: The Human Health Aspect; A Review of Selected Clinical Indicators of Stress-Induced Changes in Aquatic Organisms; Use of Bioassays in Determining the Toxicity of Sediment to Benthic Organisms; Morphological Deformities in Chironomidae (Diptera) Larvae as Biological Indicators of Toxic Stress; Mesocisms: A Tool for Studying Microbes and Effects and Behavior of Toxic Materials; Effects of Nutrients and Copper on Copepod Population Dynamics: A Mesocosm Study; New Methodologies for Assessing the Effects of Prenatal Toxic Exposure on Cognitive Functioning in Humans; Toxic Substances and Survival of Lake Michigan Salmonids: Field and Laboratory Approaches; Approaches to Modelling the Fate and Effects of Toxicants in Pelagic Systems; Development of Ecosystem Objectives for the Great Lakes.
