Taxonomic overview by Harvard's Frank M. Carpenter. Four classes in Hexapoda are recognized: Collembola, Protura, Diplura, and Insecta. The bulk of these two volumes is concerned with Insecta. More than 500 genera of fossil insects are diagnosed and 1195 are illustrated. Carpenter recognizes 38 orders, 10 of them extinct. Included are: a bibliography of well over 2400 titles documenting everything from the higher taxa down to the type species; and a stratigraphic chart showing the geologic ranges of the 777 families in the superclass.
