The application of the biological elements into the typification, classification and monitoring systems in lakes and rivers were discussed in the symposium "Typology and Classification of Lakes and Rivers" held in Helsinki, Finland October 2002. Participants from 16 countries, especially form Nordic and Baltic countries but also from Central Europe, European Joint Research Centre (JRC) and US/EPA. This volume contains extended abstracts of most of the presentations delivered at the symposium.
