Every walker and climber marvels at a flower meadow. And who has not been amazed by a small flower emerging from a crack in a rock, to direct its petals to the sun? But who can name them in the field without error? Who knows the plants able to withstand the harsh climate prevailing above 3 000 m? Or how many willow species thrive in the Alps? And which plants are toxic?
Unsere Alpenflora answers these questions. This book allows readers to discover the diversity of the plant world in the mountains. It explains species adaptation to the harsh conditions and how reproduction is ensured in various ways. It highlights the relationship between the soil and the species who can gain a foothold. Unsere Alpenflora is a compact publication, which fits in every backpack. This guide illustrates 547 species in colour and 70 with black-and-white illustrations; another 50 are mentioned in the text
The first German edition of Unsere Alpenflora was published in 1960, written by Professor Elias Landolt, who died on April 1, 2013 and thereby leaving this botanical guide orphaned. In autumn 2013, the Conservatoire et Jardin botaniques de la Ville de Genève undertook the preparatory work for the publication of a 9th German edition and 5th French edition. This was to update the book, while respecting as much as possible its concept and style that made it so successful for 55 years.
Among the new features of the updated editions:
- Very many corrections of details.
- Appendices on plant diversity and endemism.
- A revamped classification of plant families, following to the latest research in molecular biology (new classification called "APG III").
- Ecological indicator values of each species have been fully updated.
- 94% of the old photos have been replaced by new digital images.
- An updated bibliography.
