What can architects and urban designers do to make urban open spaces, streets and squares, more responsive, lively and safe? Innovations in everyday professional practice seem pivotal to bridging the gap between goals and implementation. This book is not meant to provide one comprehensive approach, a new set of solutions or a handbook of urban design. In fact, the book recognizes that a certain degree of consensus is emerging at the international level about solutions in themselves, ranging from traffic calming to responsive street design. This is the first significant attempt to draw together European views on sustainable urban design with a specific focus on social sustainability. The book presents an innovative approach in that it focuses on the sustainability of solutions rather than on the solutions in themselves, on the tools of urban analysis rather than interventions. The analytical tools are presented in a succinct style and fully referenced for further investigation.
