About this book

Language: Swedish

Bird seeds, fat balls and feeders. Many of us feed birds in winter, and it is a more widespread employment than you might at first think. It is estimated that half a million Swedish households somehow feed birds during the winter months.

This is a book about Sweden's common winter birds, i.e. birds that are in Sweden's vicinity during the colder months. It is in winter that the birds are more visible and are looking closer to us humans to search for food in our gardens. Species are few and let themselves be seen at close range, often from the kitchen window or favorite armchair by the fireplace.

It is in the meeting that one gets to know the birds and their behavior and characteristics. At least, this is the sentiment of artist, author and ornithologist Lars Jonsson. And here we get to meet all of the usual species that flock to the bird feeder. Cheeky blue tits and chattering tree sparrows, nuthatches which flip the bird seeds around. Or the everyday greenfinch, that does not make such a big fuss. All are small birds that will flee into nearby fields if a sparrow hawk pulls through the garden.

In Vinterfåglar bird artist Lars Jonsson depicts forty common species in text and stunning watercolours, all in a coherent personal style. This book will allow you to learn to identify the birds, but also tells the reader about them in a way where field determination is intermingled with cultural history and personal observations.
