About this book

The 18th Biennial Conference of the IAWQ succeeded in becoming the world focus of information exchange for the academic/research community and professionals involved in the science and practice of water quality management. Over 900 delegates from more than 50 countries attended the conference which included 288 papers in the oral presentation programme, structured into 28 themes in six parallel sessions. More than 300 further contributions had been selected for poster presentation. The oral and poster programmes were the result of an extensive review process, and the best papers have, in many cases after revision and further review, been selected for these proceedings. Part 2 contains 71 papers dealing with design and operation of wastewater treatment plants and sewerage systems. The following topics are included: wet weather pollution control; instrumentation, control and automation; design, operation and maintenance of sewerage systems and large and small wastewater treatment plants; sludge management; cross-media pollution and volatile organic emissions.

Wet Weather Pollution Control . New criteria for stormwater discharges into urban streams (A. Wagner, W.F. Geiger). Sewerage Design, Operation and Maintenance . The contribution of domestic sources to levels of key organic and inorganic pollutants in sewage: the case of Melbourne, Australia. Instrumentation, Control and Automation . Combined control of sewer and treatment plant during rainstorm (M.K. Nielsen et al .). Design, Operation and Maintenance of Large Wastewater Treatment Plants . Environmental and energy efficiency of different sewage treatment processes (I. Karlsson). Theory of filtration of highly compactable biosolids (T.G. Cleveland et al .). An expert system for selecting and sequencing wastewater treatment processes (C.-T. Yang, J.-J. Kao). Design, Operation and Maintenance of Small Wastewater Treatment Plants . Sustainable sewage treatment plants - application of nanofiltration and ultrafiltration to a pressurized bioreator (K.H. Krauth). Tracer studies of a gravel bed wetland (A.N. Shilton, J.N. Prasad). Sludge Management . Beneficial use of biosolids: progress in controlling metals (R.A. Isaac, Y. Boothroyd). Sludge chemical composition changes under uni-directional freezing (W.T. Hung et al .). Cross-Media Pollution and Volatile Organic Emissions . Transport of chlorinated hydrocarbons between sewage and sewer atmosphere.
