A History of Ornithology

Dear customers,

Welcome to the NHBS Ornithology Catalogue for birdwatchers, conservationists and ecologists. We present a round up of new and bestselling titles, along with a preview of the best forthcoming books. We are particularly excited about Helm's recently published field guides, such as Birds of Costa Rica and many more fantastic field guides due soon, including Peru and Pakistan. There are new titles covering emerging birding regions, a good example being The Birds of Kazakhstan, which makes this fascinating and undiscovered country more accessible. In the UK, Liverpool University have just published the outstanding Manx Bird Atlas, while the intriguing island of Skomer is wonderfully portrayed by Welsh publishers Graffeg. Poyser continue their superb series of monographs with one of Britain's best-known birds, the Lapwing.

The Stationery Office has published two valuable new titles for bird ecologists: Raptors: A Field Guide to Survey and Monitoring and Waterbirds Around the World, both essential and practical references for the monitoring and conservation of avifauna. We also recommend Feathers: Identification for Bird Conservation, a unique publication enabling species identification from feathers alone.

Supporting Conservation

NHBS is involved in supporting conservation at many levels - we consider this a key part of what we do and how we interact with conservation bodies and non-commercial publishers.

Gratis Books
Working in close collaboration with Professor William Sutherland at the University of East Anglia, we have distributed copies of his Conservation Handbook and Bird Ecology & Conservation to people working in science and conservation in developing countries. The next title to be offered is Ecology: From Individuals to Ecosystems.

"Thanks a million for your thoughtfulness. I received the Conservation Handbook. It is very useful to my project. Once again thank you very much and may the good God bless us all as we strive to make the environment a better place to live." J Grody Dorbor, Liberia

World Land Trust
The Books for Conservation programme is an exciting partnership between the World Land Trust and NHBS. From simple beginnings in 2002 when we donated surplus books to the WLT, this programme has developed into an important resource for struggling NGOs throughout the world. To date NHBS have donated hundreds of books to this WLT donation programme.
