All these animals also occur elsewhere in the Arabian Peninsula. In the UAE, extremes of temperature and low annual rainfall combine to make a very challenging environment for wildlife. Yet, as the pages of this guide reveal, many animal species show remarkable adaptions to life in such a harsh environment. The Arabian Oryx and Arabian Gazelle can survive without drinking water for many months at a time. The hairs on the sole of the feet of the Lesser Jerboa and the Sand cat provide a better grip and prevent sinking into soft sand. The large ears of the Sand fox can pick up the slightest sound of potential prey. This book has been prepared by the UAE's first wildlife conservation charity, the Arabian Leopard Trust (ALT).
