What's this?

Protected by an Act of 1871 which decreed that they remain for ever open and unenclosed, the Wimbledon & Putney Commons comprise about 1,140 acres of countryside, encompassing woodland, scrubland, heathland, mown recreation areas and ponds. Their dual roles as a habitat for a wide variety of bird, animal and plant life, whilst offering 24-hour public access, pose an interesting management challenge for the Conservators.

Covering a broad range of topics, this book will be of interest not only to those who know the Commons, but also to those with a general interest in natural history and the managers of other urban open spaces.

Utilising over 220 photographs and other illustrations, it offers an accessible guide to the Commons. The clear and comprehensive coverage of flora, fauna and ecology offers the reader a fascinating insight into this unique area.

Contents include: Introduction, Geology and Drainage, History, Management, Terrestrial Habitats, Fungi and Lichens, Aquatic Habitats, Insects, Fish, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds, Mammals, Extracts from a Keeper's Diary, Habitat Creation, Habitat Restoration.
