"Lesvos is in many ways an extraordinary island. Situated a mere six kilometers off the coast of Asia Minor, it's no surprise that the fauna and flora of two continents – Europe and Asia – meet here. Mountains almost 1000 metres high, exceptionally large forests for this region, numerous wetland areas and vast olive groves form a unique mosaic of different landscapes and thus habitats. This again provides the basis for an astonishing biodiversity. That alone would be reason enough to make Lesvos a very attractive spot for nature lovers, but there is still another aspect: the island is an important stepping stone for migrating birds on one of the most important routes between Northern Europe and Africa. For thousands of birds Lesvos is – mainly in spring and autumn – a major resting area. It comes as no surprise that among birders Lesvos has an excellent reputation as one of the outstanding spots in all Europe. This book by photographers Ioannis Schinezos and Roberta Pagano illustrates in a striking way much of what makes this island so special. The images show wonderful landscapes, give us an impression of the manifold flora and introduce some typical species of the island's birds to us. Far fom being mere objective documents, the photographs presented here are aesthetic compositions of light and form – and they definitely focus our desire to get to this Aegean paradise as soon as possible"
