Originally founded in 1836 as the Botanical Society of Edinburgh.
The Society has branches which hold regular meetings in Glasgow,
Aberdeen, Dundee, St Andrews, Inverness, and Edinburgh. It is the
only British botanical society with a keen interest in both
flowering and non-flowering plants. It also has an active alpine
flora section. The Society has close links with the Royal Botanic
Garden Edinburgh, relevant departments in Scottish universities,
and organisations such as Scottish Natural Heritage, and the
Botanical Society of the British Isles. The Membership includes
both amateur field botanists and academics with interests in plant
taxonomy, ecology, physiology, cell biology, biochemistry,
evolution, and conservation.
