JAPAN TROPICAL FOREST ACTION NETWORK
|
In January 1987, JATAN was formed as a coalition of twelve
Japanese grassroots organizations and individuals, with the
request of the NGOs on tropical forest conservation around the
world at the international conference in Malaysia in September
1986. One of JATAN's current activities is in Tropical Forest
Conservation. As the largest tropical timber importer in the
world, Japan has responsibility for the destruction of tropical
forests in the countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Papua New
Guinea. JATAN creates Japanese reports, holds public meetings and
reports the information in the producing countries in its
newsletters. Presents at meetings on the issue of illegal
logging, and makes recommendations such as investigating the
operational state of their business relations, reducing tropical
timber consumption and promoting use of certified timber.
