In 1826, James Smithson, a British scientist, drew up his last
will and testament that with no heirs his estate should go "to the
United States of America, to found at Washington, under the name
of the Smithsonian Institution, an establishment for the increase
and diffusion of knowledge among men." The Smithsonian
Institution is now the world's largest museum complex and research
organization. Composed of sixteen museums and galleries, as well
as the National Zoo, the Smithsonian's exhibitions offer visitors
a glimpse into its vast collection numbering over 142 million
objects.
