The Trust was established in 1931, at the initiative of the Association for the Preservation of Rural Scotland (APRS), to act as a guardian of the nation's magnificent heritage of architectural, scenic and historic treasures. It is a registered charity and not a government department and acts on behalf of everyone in its work in safeguarding Scotland's heritage.
