About this book

Language: German

The forest is considered a largely static landscape element. Viewed over a period of a hundred years, though, it is easy to determine striking changes. In Entlebuch, a municipality in the canton of Lucerne in Switzerland, extensive protected forest afforestation and, increasingly, recent natural forest growth have led to impressive landscape change.

Who remembers today how much the forest was overexploited at the end of the 19th century, pushed back to small residual areas? Who is aware of how devastating the effects are of high water levels, flooding, erosion and landslides for people at the time? And who can form an image of the great efforts that have been made to prevent long-term damage?

The unique historical imagery in this book allows a review of the state of the forest back then. Using concise comparison images, the persistent restoration of protected forest is presented.

The example used here of forest development in Entlebuch in the 20th century, and the landscape changes which accompanied it, are exemplary of the whole foothills of the Alps of Switzerland – and in some cases even for neighboring alpine countries.
