About this book

Language: English

This phylogenetic revision of a North American, desert-inhabiting beetle lineage promotes new syntactic and semantic practices – known as the “taxonomic concept approach” – that are well suited to resolve evolving taxonomic name:meaning relationships in open-ended biodiversity data environments. Accordingly, and where indicated, previous and newly inferred meanings of taxonomic names are individuated according (sec.) to one specific source. Articulations among these concepts and pairwise, logically consistent alignments of 14 original and revisionary classifications are provided, in addition to conventional nomenclatural provenance information. Broad-nosed weevils in the genus Minyomerus Horn, 1876 sec. Jansen & Franz (2015) (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) are endemic to the desert regions of southwestern North America. Three species are considered parthenogenetic while others are known to reproduce sexually. Our revision covers the seven previously recognized species as well as ten new species, providing detailed (re)descriptions, images of the adult habitus and diagnostic features, key to the species, cladistic analysis, and distributional and host plant information. The genus Piscatopus Sleeper, 1960 sec. Sleeper (1960) is changed to a junior synonym of Minyomerus sec. Jansen & Franz (2015), and its sole member, P. griseus Sleeper, 1960 sec. Sleeper (1960), is included in Minyomerus sec. Jansen & Franz (2015) as a new combination.
