About this book

Language: English

The ten species of Phanotea, all occurring in southern Africa, are revised and illustrated and a key to species is provided. Phanotea is considered as incertae sedis in the superfamily Lycosoidea. Phanotea gowi Lawrence 1964 is newly synonymized with P. peringueyi Simon. The following nine new species are described: Phanotea cavata, P. ceratogyna, P. digitata, P. knysna, P. lata, P. margarita, P. orestria, P. sathegyna, and P. xhosa. Phanotea natalensis Lawrence 1951, P. simoni Lawrence 1951, and P. latebricola Lawrence 1952 are excluded from the genus. A cladogram for the 10 included species is proposed.
