About this book

Language: German

In northern Germany there are just a few areas that have such a wide variety of species as the Schaumburg district. Here – between Weser in the south and Lake Steinhude in the North – today live 16 amphibian and six reptile species, including lizards, three species of snakes, salamanders, newts, frogs and toads. Some of them live in close proximity with humans, others are encountered only sporadically, while in large areas of northern Germany, they have already become extinct.

This work, the product of several years of volunteer field studies, concentrates all the current knowledge of all species of the area. The species are presented in numerous colour photos and colour distribution maps. The detailed descriptions contain extensive information on the biology, unique identifying features and threats, taking into account the specific territorial characteristics. In addition, the habitats between Steinhude and Weserbergland and their importance for the two groups of animals are described in detail and shown in many pictures. A chapter with a regional focus is devoted to the protective measures and salamander and reptile friendly landscaping. The motivation of authors to work on the 184-page book is the result of their long involvement in conservation. They are still active in the Naturschutzbund Schaumburg.

The book is aimed at a wide readership, especially those who are interested in nature in the Schaumburg district and on Lake Steinhude. In addition to nature conservation foundations for authorities and planners, it provides, through its determination part, good opportunities for application in biology classes. It also aims to encourage protection measures and asks for local involvement in conservation.
