About this book

Language: Japanese

This book summarizes the latest research on Anomalocaris, one of the invertebrate superstars of the Cambrian. As the name implies (Anomalo = strange, caris = shrimp), Anomalocaris was initially reported as a member of the shrimp family, several centimeters in length. However, after that, it transformed into "the first predator in the history of the earth". What is the drama in the history behind its restoration? And on what recent theories is the surprising restoration of its appearance based?

This book introduces a number of Paleozoic creatures living alongside Anomalocaris, such as Opabinia and Hallucigenia, with Anomalocaris canadensis taken as the representative species of Anomalocaris. The genus Anomalocaris is explored in its entirety, including the global environment in which it lived 500 million years ago, its relationships, and the evolutionary genealogy inherited and handed over by Anomalocaris.

Supervised by Dr. Gengo Tanaka of Kanazawa University, this book includes over 100 paintings and fossil sketches, handled by Shunichi Kawasaki, an animal painter who has been attracting attention in recent years.
