Volume 1 of the Aquarium Atlas contains condensed knowledge in one compact tome. It presents about 600 ornamental fishes, 100 aquatic plants and, beginning with its 11th German edition, a chapter on amphibians and crustacea. It is a self-contained book. At present, the Aquarium Atlas consists of 6 volumes, each containing different species. Approximately 4,750 fishes and 330 aquatic plants have been pictured in full color and described. Scientists from around the world have helped to give the Aquarium Atlas worldwide renown.

The hardback is billed as the sixth revised English edition, 2005 reprint, the paperbak as the sixth revised English edition, 2004 reprint.
