About this book

The Atlas records the distribution of birds in the neighbouring states of Delhi and Haryana in northern India and illustrates the seasonal occurence of the mapped species - updating the records up to May 2006. It maps 266 commoner species, identifying resident breeding species, passage migrants, and winter and breeding summer visitors. The text concentrates on habitat, distribution and behaviour. A further 252 species which are either scarce or very local in the two states are covered by short accounts, with photographs in some cases. Finally, 45 species which have not been recorded since 1970 are listed with simple references where possible. The introductory chapters describe the geography of the two states, trends in the study of birds here, and some rural Haryana folktales involving birds.
