"This splendid work on the Brazilian Cerrado flora appears at a very appropriate time when focus on conserving the remaining areas of this extremely endangered vegetation is ever more urgent. Forty-five years ago when I started my studies in the cerrado biome the use its area of two million sq. km., approximately the same size as Western Europe and only exceeded by that of the Amazonian forest in Brazil, was confined to low density cattle-raising using the natural vegetation and basic near-subsistence agriculture. However all this changed with the introduction of modern mechanized agriculture, supported in its early stages by generous Brazilian government subsidies, and now at least 70% of the biome's original area is devoted to extreme intensive agriculture (principally beef cattle-raising and soya production). In some areas such as the state of São Paulo the proportion is much greater than this and only a very small proportion of the original cerrado vegetation survives. Such destruction of native vegetation would be considered of great concern anywhere, but it is even more serious since the cerrado biome has c.11 500 species of native vascular plants and is ranked as one of the world's 25 most important global diversity hotspots.

Atlas of Wood Diversity in the Cerrado of São Paulo is the result of the collaboration of a group of distinguished plant anatomists, four of them professors and researchers from the UNESP (São Paulo State University) and linked with the Forest Institute of São Paulo State and one from the Jodrell Laboratory of the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, UK – a very nice example of productive international co-operation. It is completely bilingual, giving texts, glossaries, etc., in both Portuguese and English. Superb colour photographs are provided of the morphological features (flowers, fruits, leaves, bark, etc.) and in addition longitudinal and transverse sections of their wood for most of the 91 important species covered in the text.

The work is directed at researchers, amateurs and other interested lovers of the cerrado and to such a readership will be very informative and a valuable aid to identification."

Este excelente trabalho sobre a flora do cerrado brasileiro aparece em um momento muito apropriado quando o foco na conservação das áreas remanescentes dessa vegetação extremamente ameaçada é cada vez mais urgente. Quarenta e cinco anos atrás, quando iniciei meus estudos no bioma cerrado, o uso dessa área de dois milhões de quilômetros quadrados, aproximadamente o mesmo tamanho da Europa Ocidental e apenas ultrapassada pela floresta amazônica no Brasil, estava limitado a criação de gado utilizando a vegetação natural e agricultura de quase-subsistência. Entretanto, tudo isso mudou com a introdução da agricultura mecanizada moderna, apoiada em seus estágios iniciais por generosos subsídios do governo brasileiro, e agora pelo menos 70% da área original do bioma é dedicada à agricultura intensiva extrema (principalmente pecuária e produção de soja). Em algumas áreas, tais como o estado de São Paulo, a proporção é muito maior do que isso e apenas uma proporção muito pequena do cerrado original sobrevive. Essa destruição da vegetação nativa passa a ser considerada de grande preocupação em qualquer lugar, mas é ainda mais grave porque o bioma cerrado tem cerca de 11 500 espécies nativas de plantas vasculares e é classificado como um dos 25 mais importantes hotspots mundiais de diversidade global.

O livro é resultado da colaboração de um grupo distinto de anatomistas de plantas, sendo quatro deles professores e pesquisadores da UNESP (Universidade Estadual Paulista), com ligação com o Instituto Florestal do Estado de São Paulo e um pesquisador do Laboratório Jodrell do Jardim Botânico Real do Kew, UK – um exemplo muito bom de cooperação internacional produtiva. Esta obra é totalmente bilíngüe, com textos, glossários, etc, tanto em português quanto em inglês. Fotografias excelentes a cores são fornecidas das características morfológicas (flores, frutos, folhas, cascas, etc) e, além disso, cortes longitudinais e transversais da madeira para a maioria das 91 espécies importantes abrangidas no texto.

O trabalho é dirigido a pesquisadores, leigos e outros interessados amantes do cerrado e, ao público leitor, e será muito informativo e de ajuda valiosa para a identificação.
