About this book

The American ornithologist came to Britain in 1826 seeking an engraver capable of reproducing his life-sized paintings for The Birds of America. Before trying London, he visited Edinburgh, fell in love with it and found the collaborators he needed. This is a beautifully illustrated account of his stay, with many examples of his art.

A highly illustrated vivid account... -- Bookseller Independent Catalogue, September 2003. "The size of Chalmer's book works better with Audubon's plates - the bigger the better, as he intended. ...The book places Audubon securely within the science of his time." -- Nature, December 2003. "This attractive & well-illustrated book, based on Audubon's own writings, features many of Audubon's and MacGillivray's brilliant ornithological illustrations." -- British Ornithologists' Union, Ibis, 146, 2004.
