About this book

Language: Bilingual in English and Portuguese

This book is the second in a collection of three volumes illustrating some species that make up the rich birdlife of the Brazilian state of Paraná, where – according to recent estimates – a total of 744 species occur. The bird chosen for the cover is the Red-tailed amazon (Amazona brasiliensis), a bird endemic to Brazil, its occurrence is restricted to the coast of the states of Paraná and São Paulo. In the state of Paraná, about 70% of its population is concentrated. It nests on forest-covered islands in the Bay of Paranaguá, Paraná. Its nest is made in the hollow of trees, where the couple often stay together. One of the causes that increase the risk of extinction of this species is the fact that they always reproduce in the same tree; and when that is cut down, the couple usually does not procreate anymore. These and numerous other facts and trivia are reported in the text by ornithologist Fernando C. Straube, accompanying 149 photos of award-winning photographer Marcelo Krause.
