In order to comprehensively assess the threatened status of Chinese birds, the authors used the IUCN Red List classification standard to evaluate the 1,445 species of birds included in the "Chinese Bird Classification and Distribution List" (third edition), of which 3 species were listed as regionally extinct (RE), 18 as critically endangered (CR), 48 species as endangered (EN), 78 species as vulnerable (VU), 223 species as near threatened (NT), 969 species as least concern (LC), and 105 species as data deficient (DD), and one species as invalid. The book also gives the classification status, assessment information, geographic distribution, population status and development trend, habitat, threat factors, protection actions, etc. of threatened or extinct species in the wild.
