About this book

Language: Bilingual in English and Portuguese

This beautiful and informative work constitutes the first photographic guide of the amphibians and reptiles of Portugal. The book contains more than 400 photographs, distribution maps and other visual elements that allow the reader to identify the species present in Portugal. In addition to the monographs of each species – including its description, distribution, biology, similar species, and other information – the book has chapters on habitats, the life cycle, and conservation of amphibians and reptiles.

In a country where these animals are especially threatened by habitat destruction from various sources, such as climate change and major fires, this guide helps stakeholders to observe, know and help protect the fragile ecosystems they occupy.

  • Not good for identifying portuguese herpetofauna
By João 6 Feb 2021 Written for Paperback
I bought this book hoping that finally there was a book with all the tools to identify Portuguese herpetofauna...I was mistaken!!
The book has almost no information on how to identify the species besides the few photos (normally 3 per species) and very brief descriptions which are something like: "small lizard with brown coloration" lol. The photos themselves do not help as they don't show variation within the species, especially for wall lizards (Podarcis). Also, the taxonomy is not up to date, which is unforgivable, as some species, for which the taxonomy changed due to molecular tests in 2008 (for example) are not included in the book which is from 2018. This just shows little concern about actually making a scientifically correct book, as a lot more research should have been done. As a Portuguese herpetologist, I would discourage anyone from buying this book, it's better to have the old book from FAPAS (2001) about Portuguese herpetofauna than this one for sure.
