Language: Czech
This is the first Czech monograph on the Antarctic. It is divided into four thematic units. The first part gives information about Antarctica as a continent and its position and importance on a planetary scale, its physical geography (relief of glaciation, the island, climate), geological development, and wildlife on land and in the sea. The second part focuses on the history of discoveries, past and present impacts of human presence, including the environmental problems associated with them, the Antarctic legal system and the history of Czech scientific presence on the continent. The third part is regionally narrowed to the James Ross Island area, the history of its discovery, promotion and construction of the Czech Antarctic Station. The final section presents the results of original research in the Czech research station, based on geology, geomorphology, paleontology, climatology, glaciology and biological research (biodiversity and physiology of lower plants, the ongoing effects of global warming on vegetation, and ornithology). The authors of the publications are the leading Czech experts in polar research, and therefore it presents a number of interesting and little published or original information. The book is not only intended for a narrow circle of specialists – it's a popular scientific publication intended for a wider community of readers.
