Alsace houses not less than 18 species of amphibians and 7 species of indigenous reptiles. This distribution atlas, resulting from the collective work of the environmental organization BUFO, offers a complete overview of the current knowledge of the amphibians and reptiles in Alsace. Each species is presented with a monography including a distribution map in color, chapters about systematics, past and current distribution, ecology within the region, status of populations, threats and conservation.
More general chapters deal with the geography of Alsace, biogeography and systematics of alsacian species of amphibians and reptiles, methods for collecting and analysing data and finally a general overview of threats and conservations of the herpetofauna of the region. A little more than 8000 data gathered between 1990 and 2007 were used for the distribution maps. The Atlas of amphibians and reptiles of Alsace constitutes an excellent tool for the knowledge of these animals that are more and more taken into account in conservation and management issues.
