Crocodiles have existed for 220 million years and they have fascinated mankind since the dawn of time. Honoured like Gods in ancient Egypt or venerated like guardian angels in Burkino Faso, they are nevertheless more commonly known to be awesome predators. Hidden amongst the tropical vegetation of Latin America's vast wetlands, or in the swamps of Africa or the marshlands of Florida, the crocodiles keep watch. But these ferocious reptiles also make wonderful parents and form real social links amongst themselves. Nowadays, they live in fear and from now on the danger is a human one. In certain parts of the world, the survival of these creatures is threatened by pollution, hunting and invasion of their habitat. In Crocodiles, Luc Fougeirol leads us on a trail of discovery of 23 species of crocodile, from 4 different continents.
Luc Fougeirol has been fascinated by crocodiles since childhood. After working many years in various zoos, he brought home his first caiman, found on a trip to French Guyana, and kept it in a pond under the greenhouses of his farmer-father. Shortly after, he added tropical plants and other crocodile species. In 1994 in Pierrelate, Luc and his brother opened their Crocodile Farm. This is the biggest heated glass-house in Europe and visitors can see here crocodiles from Africa, Asia, Australia and South America. Its success as a tourist destination has allowed Luc to campaign for more awareness and conservation of crocodiles. His commitment to the cause has earned him a good reputation among crocodile experts and scientists all over the world.
