About this book

The natural nesting place for Apis mellifera, western honey bees, is a small cave or cavity in rocks accessible through a narrow, easily guarded fissure. A hollow tree can also provide a similarly desirable nesting site. The change from honey hunting to beekeeping comes when man tries to provide an attractive alternative that offers bees a permanent homeyet, from the beekeeper's point-of-view, is accessible.

Hives has been compiled from the artefacts in the IBRA Museum Collection. To complement the individual items additional materials and illustrations have been used, all of which have been sourced from IBRA’s unique photographic, journal and book collections. Over 90 (colour and black and white) pictures and illustrations throughout. Third in the series, it follows on from Protective Clothing and Skeps, Tools and Accessories.
