The current volume is the first of a series of determining books of the larvae of northern European Noctuidae.

The morphology, especially mouth parts, rearing and preparation of larvae in general are surveyed. In the taxonomic part the families Nolidae and Noctuidae, of which subfamilies Sarrothripinae, Eariasinae, Chloephoridae, Raphiinae, Pantheinae Acronictinae, Dilobiinae, Bryophilinae, Rivuliinae, Herminiinae, Strepsimaninae, Trisatelinae, Hypeninae, Catocalinae, Gonopterinae, Calpinae, Aediinae, Eustrotiinae, Eublemmidae, Euteliinae, Plusiinae, Acontiinae, Tytinae, Cuculliinae, Oncocnemidinae, Condicinae, Stiriinae,
Amphipyrinae, Psaphidinae, Heliothinae and Pseudeustrotiinae are reviewed. Synonyms, identifying characters, biology, phenology and distribution of the species are presented. The remaining two volumes will contain the rest of the Noctuidae.
