About this book

Language: French with bilingual identification keys in English and French

The Dynastidae constitute a group of very spectacular beetles whose diversity is extremely important in tropical rain forests. In French Guiana there are more than 140 species, some of which are among the largest insects in the world. Paradoxically, their biology and ecology is very poorly known and it is currently impossible to draw up a complete inventory of the species present in South America. To fill this gap, the authors have collected all the available information available for more than five years in order to put together a reliable and up-to-date database. Significant taxonomic and systematic revision work was carried out to draw up a precise list of the species present in French Guiana. Finally, close collaboration with a network of local entomologists has made it possible to collect biological and ecological information which significantly improves knowledge of the group (distribution, seasonality, larval ecology, etc.).

After an introductory part devoted to the biology of the Dynastidae, their environment and the methods of observation and collection, the authors propose determination keys (in French and English) and very complete descriptive sheets for each of the species (accompanied by essential habitus photos and diagrams of traits allowing to validate the identifications carried out). In the final part, the authors draw up the results of this inventory, highlighting certain sampling gaps and opening up prospects for future prospecting and research work.

This illustrated fauna of the different species present in French Guiana aims to facilitate the identification of species and to generate field studies in the future. It is intended for naturalists, professional or amateur entomologists, managers of natural areas and more generally all those involved in the protection and conservation of the natural heritage of French Guiana.
