About this book

Taking an evidence-based approach along with a dose of healthy skepticism, this new edition of a paradigm-shaking book brings together, in one place, a broad range of hot-button scientific topics concerning the threats to the quality of human life. This book dispels environmental myths by measuring the barometers of environmental health - cancer death rates; birth and infant mortality rates; air, water, and noise pollution; hazardous wastes; chemicals in food; pesticides; accidents and occupational health; sanitary sewage and waste water treatment; disease patterns; and more.

Contents

Webs of causation; the environment as a system; microbial food poisoning; chemicals in food; zoonoses; pesticides; accidents; noise pollution; occupational health; radiation and nuclear power generation; air pollution; water pollution; sanitary sewage/waste water treatment; hazardous and solid wastes; population and patterns of disease; risk assessment, communication, and the politics of pollution.
