About this book

This revised edition is the story of the renowned naturalist, Thomas Paine Bellchambers, 1858-1929. The first section describes Tom's background, character and philosophy. The next section concentrates on his Humbug Scrub Sanctuary which he began in 1905 and the problems he faced. Unlike the first edition in 1998 which was sold out, the new edition contains a well-illustrated section about the mallee fowl. This amazing bird fascinated Tom so much he dedicated much of his time to it, documenting important factors for those who would carry on the work. His efforts were rewarded as he became the first person to breed the mallee fowl in captivity.
