About this book

Aquatic and Wetland Plants of India is a reference and identification manual for the vascular plants found in permanent or seasonal fresh water in the subcontinent of India south of the Himalayas. About 660 species are described and the style of the text is accessible both to experts and to those with only a little botanical training. All the plants are illustrated by line drawings showing the diagnostic features.

The importance of wetlands to life on Earth is now generally accepted. This is the first such Flora to cover wetland plants for this entire geographical area, replacing and supplementing many local Floras. It will enable scientists and conservationists to identify the plants with accuracy and to build on this information to promote conservation. This is a most valuable contribution to systematic botany by an international recognized scientist.

Media reviews

"beautifully executed [...] most welcome."
Journal of the International Association for Plant Taxonomy, February 1997

"Professor Cook has [...] done a great service for the country in two ways: first identifying the wetland plants and second, providing a flora of wetland and aquatic plants for nearly the whole country (except Himalaya and coastal marine areas). The book is indispensable for anyone interested in wetlands, and is an invaluable contribution to botany in India. The book will definitely be of interest to scientists in the neighbouring countries where the flora is not very different."
Ecology & Environmental Sciences, Vol. 22 – 1996

"A very instructive and comprehensive book, containing information on aquatic and wetland plants [...] The author, with numerous co-workers, has summarized an extensive amount of data on the distribution, biology and ecology of the plants (only chromosome counts are lacking), and has created a valuable synthesis. The book is necessary not only for anyone who is interested in the flora of peninsula India, but it is a useful source of information for researchers and students of tropical floras or taxonomy and the distribution of wetland and water species on a worldwide scale."
– Zdenka Hroudova, Folia Geobotanica 9/97
