About this book

Language: French

This beautiful book is dedicated to the art of the Upper Paleolithic and is the fruit of twenty years of research in French and Spanish caves. The intention of the author is to approach the subject in a "global" way, studying both the status of painters, engravers, sculptors, and the intentions that led them to adorn these underground networks. The diversity of the themes figured, the graphic quality of the images, and the technical mastery suggest that our ancestors were trained in the art of representation and approached the cave like real ornate architecture.

This book offers a wide variety of quality images, mostly unpublished and made by the author. Professor of prehistory at the Free University of Brussels, Marc Groenen worked in many ornate caves. He currently directs the study of the El Castillo cave (Cantabria) and is part of the Chauvet cave team.
