This little book is a chronologically arranged look at specific years, when weather conditions made adverse impact on day-to-day life. It is not a dull, dreary record of meteorological statistics, but tells of some of the consequences of extremes of weather – floods, blizzards, lightning strikes, fireballs, fog, storms and disasters. Most of the featured reports are from a time before 'global warming', when communications were primitive or non-existent, and when things we take for granted simply weren't around: electricity, central heating, double or triple glazing, insulated homes, four-wheel drives, gritting lorries, lifeboats, air ambulances, trained rescue groups, mobile phones, local radio, television and so on.
