About this book

Language: German

Hardly any other insect group is as popular as the grasshoppers. Who does not know the stories of horrific biblical plagues, does not love the homely sound of chirping crickets after rain, or does not have childhood memories of the whispering sounds coming from haystacks in meadows? Grasshoppers inhabit a wide range of habitats from the lowlands to the snow line, including many threatened biotopes such as moors, wildflower meadows or flower-rich mountain sides and dry grasslands. The high demands of locusts on local conditions and on the micro- and macroclimate predestine the thermally demanding animals as indicators for the dimensions and effects of climate warming. They are sensitive to usage changes in their biotopes, are often endangered and therefore important instruments in nature conservation and biodiversity monitoring.

The well-known Tyrolean biologist Armin Landmann, with the help of the well-known grasshopper expert Thomas Zuna-Kratky and the use of more than 20,000 data points from more than 200 field workers, now presents a comprehensive analysis of the habitats, populations and areal patterns, and the threatsto the 81 species of grasshoppers in Tyrol, Austria. With a richly illustrated introduction to the biology of these astoundingly diverse and colourful jumping insects, clear, general species profiles and a variety of magnificent colour photos of the species and their habitats, the work is not only directed at the specialist, but also at locals and naturalists.
