About this book

Language: German

Caddisflies are insects whose larvae live in water and whose imaginal stage lives on land. They are a wanderer between two worlds and especially adapted to both aquatic life and airborne and life. The various mechanisms of adaptations make them interesting and the aim of this book is to give a better understanding of these insects.

To protect themselves, larvae build tubes from grit, plant parts and snail shells, or stretch nets which will catch food; others are predatory. All larvae and pupae, however, have in common that they breathe in water and need to overcome osmosis.

The adult animals have the ability to fly, often in large swarms, when the day changes to night. Swarms are nuptial flights in whichsupported by pheromones – pairs are formed, after which females soon lay eggs in the water or in its vicinity. After this the next cycle in their development starts..

The curiosity that provides this knowledge and enriches our science has a history that goes back a long way, at least to the Greeks and Romans. It is interesting to learn how over the centuries not only general knowledge grew, but also the knowledge of this particular insect order. Thus, the exposé on caddisflies in this book begins with a brief history of caddisfly research.
