A dictionary on geotechnical engineering whose aim is to promote better understanding and communication between people of different nationalities working in the fields of soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering. It is designed as a time-saving reference work, not only in the office but also when working abroad. Soils, rocks, earth and sediments constitute the main subjects of this dictionary. It is intended to be reasonably complete in the coverage of topics frequently used in soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering, including many of the engineering aspects of geology, geophysics, geohydrology, geological survey methods, laboratory investigations and the application of geotextiles. The scope is relatively wide, also including general terms from science and engineering. The dictionary contains 5803 numbered items consisting of basic terms and related terms in English and equivalents in French, Spanish, Dutch and German, totalling more than 36,000 terms. The terms have been derived from relevant authentic literature written by scientists in their native language. It includes nouns, verbs and adjectives.
