This is the first attempt to produce a user-friendly colour field guide to species level for an Amazonian forest. The Ducke Reserve belongs to the National Amazon Research Institute (INPA). It includes 10,000 ha of non-flooded forest, one of the most diverse habitats on the planet, and the principal vegetational cover of all of the Amazon basin. The guide covers about 2200 species, of all life-forms, including ferns. It is designed and written in a way that should help any interested person identify any plant, and also provides a comprehensive introduction to the Amazon flora. While written specifically for the Ducke Reserve, it will also be usable throughout Amazonia. Many of the species occur over a wide geographical area, and the information at family and genus level will be useful anywhere.
