eDNA, or environmental DNA, is a powerful and increasingly popular tool for determining the presence of Great Crested Newts (GCN) that is approved by Natural England. All that is needed to determine GCN presence is a water sample. Unlike traditional methods of GCN survey, the collection of pond water samples for eDNA analysis has very low impact on newts and other pond inhabitants. eDNA surveys also offer great benefits by reducing the amount of time spent on surveys, and they are not restricted to specific times of day. The survey window specified by Natural England for GCN eDNA is 15th April to 30th June.
NHBS have teamed up with specialist consultancy ADAS to supply GCN eDNA kits for the 2022 survey season.
ADAS is the only eDNA laboratory in the UK to score 100% in the proficiency testing for 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021!
The kit options and pricings (excluding VAT) are as follows:
Standard Service (7-10 days) - £165
Fast Track Service (5 days) - £240
Super-Fast Track Service (2 days) - £300
Non-Priority Service (up to 1 month) - £150
Return Courier (up to 25 kits) - £20
Please note that this service is only available to UK customers due to shipping restrictions.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
After ordering your kits (one kit per pond/lake, or one kit per hectare if the water source is larger than one hectare) and specifying the date that they are required, you will receive your kits through the post. These contain all you need to collect eDNA samples and easy-to-follow instructions will guide you through the collection process. Samples are then sent to ADAS where analysis is carried out, and the results are sent back to you.
WHY CHOOSE ADAS?
* Quick turnaround: choose from super-fast track to non-priority services
* Tiered pricing system: Receive discount for bulk orders
* Experienced laboratory: ADAS correctly identified all blind samples during four years of proficiency testing
